Need to choose a screen for an event, a shopfront or an internal communication space? You've certainly come across the terms LED and LCD, and confusion is common. These two technologies don't have the same strengths, the same limitations or the same uses.

At Proxiled, we help Belgian companies, public authorities and event organisers make this choice every week. Here is our summary from the field, without unnecessary jargon.
LED and LCD: the fundamental difference
LED technology produces its own light through diodes. LCD technology uses liquid crystals lit by a backlight. The result: LED screens are brighter, more visible outdoors and more durable. LCDs are often cheaper for limited indoor use.
Pixel pitch: why it's crucial
Pixel pitch is the distance between two neighbouring pixels. The smaller it is (P1.89 mm), the finer the image. A larger pitch (P3.91 mm) suits longer viewing distances. Proxiled offers screens in P1.89, P2.5 and P3.91 mm depending on the use.
Outdoors: LED is the clear choice
For any outdoor use (façade, open-air event, roadside display), LCD is out of the question. LED screens withstand the weather and maintain sufficient brightness in full sunlight. An LCD fades in natural light.
Indoors: it depends
For short-distance indoor display on a tight budget, LCD can do the job. As soon as you're talking about a video wall or a display visible from 5 metres or more, LED is the obvious choice for quality and modularity.
Durability and total cost
A well-maintained LED screen can last 10 years or more. For a municipality or company that wants a durable tool, LED is generally the more cost-effective investment over 5 years.
Flexibility and modularity
LED panels combine to form surfaces of any size: giant video walls, columns, curved façades, totems. LCDs are constrained by their fixed formats.
Events vs permanent installation
For a one-off event, our mobile LED screens for rental deliver maximum visual impact without a purchase investment. For a permanent installation, we work with you to size the right solution.
Conclusion: LED or LCD?
In 80% of cases (outdoor events, façades, video walls, large-format displays), LED technology is the best suited, the most durable and the best performing.
